It's one of those moments where I'm regretting not taking trigonometry in high school. At least I can feel better knowing that I would have likely forgotten most of it by now.

Anyways, I am making a curved surface, think half of cylinder. This half cylinder has a height of 6" and a diameter of 18". This gives half circumference of about 28 1/4" and a surface area of almost 170 sq in (not really relevant here but interesting factoid to someone who was rapidly needing to go to bed when I first wrote it). I want to add an edge to one side (1 7/16") of my half cylinder that drops away at a 45 degree angle, sticking one inch out and one inch to the side (a 90-45-45 triangle). I would like to find the angle to cut to bring the flange together. While the number I'm looking for is good, I'm also curious about the formula at hand in the event I need to tweak it (like changing the angle of the bevel for instance).

Taxes this year are due on Monday, April 15th. We know a lot of you may be working late the weekend before to get them all done and in on time. We appreciate that. So after you’ve finished carrying the one and referencing table A on document 1086, we think you should reward yourself with a little shimmy, some bump and grind, and some of Seattle’s amazing burlesque performers. On Saturday, I debuted a brand new act, The Spectral Carnival and one of the key stones to the costume--and the final reveal--is the mask I wear.

Copyright 2013, violetdeville.com

In the first of what I hope will be a long line of articles about making some of the stuff I do. In the least, it'll be an archive for me to reference in the future but I hope it helps you too. In this case, I had to attach a new piece of elastic to the mask.[more]

Hot glue is simply plastic that we heat up until it melts. While the goo will stick to just about anything thing, once it cools down into a rigid form it's not sticky at all. It's adhesion properties comes from th way it wraps around crevices and fibers while it's still a fluid.

If that doesn't make sense try thinking of it this way: Water in a plastic baggie isn't going to stick to anything. Put it in a wire basket with hole big enough to let the baggie push through but not all the way and freeze it. When it pull it out, chances are you won't be able to remove it until you break the ice or melt it because the water has become a solid mass around the wires of the basket. Now put that same baggie of water into a glass bowl and freeze it again. This time it comes right out of the bow with relative ease.

The same thing happens when you're using hot glue on something smooth and shiny: There is nothing for the hot glue to hold on to. This is not the end of the world and we can fix it simply enough by using some super glue and felt.

Cut a small piece of felt a little bigger than what you're sticking to the smooth, shiny plastic object. Using the suger glue, glue the felt to it onto the plastic object. I find it works best if you saturate the felt with super glue. Becareful not super glue yourself to the felt or the shiny plastic. That stuff will take off skin if you're not careful. I use the head of a ball tipped stick pin to push it down.

Next, place a dollup of hot glue on the felt and using a craft stick or pair of tweezers, push the object you're gluing into the hot glue and let it cool.

When the hot glue cools, you'll find a strong bond between the two pieces. Here's what the inside of the mask looks like.

CopyrightAs the reality storm comes to a head seek refuge at Worlds' End and stay for the stories

Join us for an extravaganza of clever and sassy homage to the many worlds of Neil Gaiman, a prolific writer with notable works spanning comic books, novels, children's books and stories, television series, and film. The tales involve a goddess, Beldam and her doll, the heart of a blue box, a young woman who is far older than she appears, an enslaved faerie, the very essence of dreams personified, and more.

Okay, maybe it's not quite like that but we're certainly bringing the sexy beasts to Belltown on March 9th.

Captain James Tiberius Kirk. You know the man, the legendary captain of the starship Enterprise. His record is impressive and that's just the women he's taken to bed. Opposing him in Captain Royale: A Commanding Burlesque Showdown is Captain Kathryn Janeway, another Starfleet officer and captain of the starship Voyager. Captain Janeway is known for being a straight laced, by the numbers kind of woman who cares deeply for her crew. Kirk will show you what you do with an Orion slave girl while Janeway will let that tight bun of hers down. Dahlia Ste. Cys and Marcus DeBoyz will throw down with Miss Candy Apples this Saturday at the Re-Bar for Captain Royale. Which one will you choose?

Ten captains. One reigns supreme. You choose.

You're aware of Captain Steve Rogers, yes? Perhaps you're more familiar with his persona, Captain America. The eternal soldier. The boy scout. He's here to deal with Morgue Anne and he needs to put a stop to his nefarious plans. Perhaps he should be more focused on his competition, the homicidal clown and patriarch of the Firefly clan, Captain Spaulding. What will the proprietor of the Museum of Madmen and Monsters bring to the stage? We're certain it will be most fowl.

The Morgue Anne and Nikola Nova face off against Kitty Calamity in the throw down of epic proportions. Captain Royale: A Commanding Burlesque Showdown this Saturday at the Re-Bar.

Who will you choose?

Ten captains. One reigns supreme. Vote early. Vote often.

Dear Kevin Kauer,

I am writing to express my concern over the name you chose for your party, "Hey Tranny, It's Tranny". As a trans woman, I am positively alarmed that you would casually toss around the word tranny, a slur used against trans women, without any apparent care.

Tranny is a word used to insinuate that my gender, and the gender of people like me, is fake or artificial; that I am not a woman, that I am less than a woman. Likewise tranny has even been used to insult cis woman like Anne Coulter, Lady Gaga, Hillary Clinton, Cher and many others, suggesting that they are as ugly as “men in dresses”.

In many cases the word tranny  is the last thing heard by a trans person before a vicious attack. In 2012 over 250 transgender people that we know of--and many more that we don’t of--lost their lives due to hate. This figure doesn’t even include those who took their own lives. A disproportionate amount if these victims were trans women. How many of them do you think were called a tranny before they met their end?

You say that “Hey Tranny, It’s Tranny” embraces and loves all of the LGBTQI community. Yet you toss around a slur like tranny so casually that a lot trans people, including myself, don't feel that love. I don’t know how much thought you gave it when you settled on “Hey Tranny, It’s Tranny” as a party name. My hope is that you didn’t realize tranny was a slur; that you simply thought it was a cute and fun part of the drag queen culture. My fear, though, is that you do know about the damage that word causes and you simply don’t care.

That was that movie in 1984, wasn't it? Oh well, daddy would've gotten us uzis. There is that total global blackout that Nasa's predicting. That is so it, right? In the midst of all the glitter and glam, I take a moment out once a year to honor those trans people who we lost to acts of hate and fear on the Transgender Day of Remembrance. This is the day where we take stock of our dead and we do it on the 20th of November every year. The victims of this violence are mostly inflicted by others, sometimes by the victim and the group hit hardest every year are women of color.

Society often tells us that trans people don't matter, that we're a punch line to a joke, and less than human. It's crushing. So if you know a trans persons, man or woman, take a moment out of your day and let them know you care. Do it today while we grieve, but also do it every day.

Thank you.

CopyrightThe good folks at Good Co Music are having a CD release party for their debut release, Electro Swing for the Masses on November 27th at the Can Can in Pike Place Market. Sure, the disc came out a couple of months ago but why should that stop us from a good party with swinging beats?

You might be asking yourself, "Just what is electro swing music anyway?" Imagine if you took the music of Cab Calloway, Glenn Miller, and Benny Goodman and applied house music style production techniques of looping, syncing, and samples for a start. If it's still not a clear answer, give Zebra Donkey a listen.

This party is just $5.
The doors open at 9:00pm for open dancing with a free swing dance lesson at 9:30 pm.
The band comes on stage at 10:00 pm.

If that weren't enough for you, the very lovely Whisper De Corvo and I will be bringing our fancy lady selves as a compliment to the swinging beats. It'll be a fun and sassy time.

DJ Brackenfern will be spinning the swinging tunes for us.

This is going to be a fantastic way to wind down a Tuesday night.
