From the jidianstation.org website:
12/18/2009 - The December 20th game has been canceled due to snow. Jim and I decided that prognosis of the local roads do not look good--they are certainly quite nasty right now--and the uncertainty around what the weather will bring. At the time of this writing, weather.com is predicting more snow on Saturday. We are gifting 5 XP to every player because of the cancelation and we may consider doing a make-up game at another time.

In the office of Olin Thomjack...

Allyn Moore approached the open door to Olin Thomjack's office. "What's the status, Moore?" Thomjack didn't look up from the paperwork before him.

The young engineer shifted from foot to foot. "Eden's dome has been patched and braced, but..."

"But you're not sure how long it will hold?"

"No, Sir," Moore said, taking a moment to breathe deeply, "I'm concerned about Midian's dome, sir." Without giving the senior engineer any time to respond, the new engineer jumped into the details. "Midian may be the newer bay, Sir, but her dome is older than Eden's. If Eden's has cracked, I'm sure the other isn't far behind."

The engineer managed to catch her supervisor's attention. Sitting up, Thomjack eyed her, "What do you think the best course of action is then?"

"I think we should be scanning the dome structure for stresses before anything else."

"Sounds like a good start, Moore."

"Thank you, Sir." Allyn Moore left the room a little lighter than when she entered it.

Thomjack scratched his thigh absently as he turned his attention back to the diagnostic report on reactor 2. The problem child of the station had been acting up again and this time, Thomjack was tempted to just leave it shutdown for the time being. Now, if he could just shake that feeling that disaster was looming around the corner.

One could almost say that the mood aboard Ji Dian Station is festive, almost celebratory, in its welcome for the new director of the Blue Stars unit stationed aboard the skyplex, Director Björn Kaiser. There are those who are hoping to reign in the unchecked forces running amok aboard the station.

However, this façade of gaiety covers the growing worry over the brewing unrest of those on the lower decks. Ever since the death of Hieronymus Blake, the famed artist, some of those on the lower decks have stated their loyalty to a man only known as Feral and worked to prevent those on the top side from entering decks below 13.

Interesting times are afoot, pushing loyalties beyond limits. Nevertheless, the question remains: Who will you ride the river with?

On the operations deck of Ji Dian Station...
"Shuttle Paso Doble, do you copy?"
Huo Evans looked at the scrawny man, "Any response, Thomjack?"
The chief of engineering let out a sigh, "No, Cheerful, no one's opened up the com over there." Olin always took a bit of pleasure when poking Evans, knowing who much he hates the nickname.
"What'd you got on the ship?"
"It's a Mercerindyne Hopster, a speedy little short range shuttle."
   "What's it doing out here?"
"That's a very good question," Olin looked at Cheerful to gauge his reaction before continuing his analysis. "Her reactor shielding looks to be runnin' a little hot and the aft hull looks like it's leakin'. She was beat up pretty bad, Huo. There is only one life sign on that boat I can see and it's fadin' pretty fast."
"Is she goin' to hit us?"
"No, but with her trajectory, she has a date with the planet in about five hours. Listen, I know we haven't seen any out here yet, but do you think it might be...reavers?"
"This far in, Thomjack? You must be itchin' to leave here earlier than you said, aren't you? No, it's probably not reavers." Cheerful turned to walk out, "Get your best crew assembled to bring her in. If he's still alive by then, he's gonna need to see the doc. If it was reavers...we need to know."

Ji Dian Station, Episode 15: The Devil You Know
Four hours before Lucky Lucy's opened on the 26th, reports began coming across the cortex that the Richards Federal Station on Triumph was badly damaged by a bomb blast in what many are calling a terrorist action. Fourteen federal agents and five civilians were killed in the blast and thirty-eight more were wounded. Within minutes of the blast, all traffic on and off of the moon were closed down. The Feds have even insisted on blockading the station in case the bomber was able to get off planet before the blast. People on the deck five, where the docking rings can be found, collectively sighed in resignation as the station was placed into orbital lock once again. Obviously, the feds do not want any of recent arrivals to leave in hurry.

In very least there is still Lucy's and there is no sign of it not opening on time.

Please join us at the Sammamish Forest Manors Clubhouse for "The Devil You Know", the 15th episode of Ji Dian Station on July 26th at 2:00 pm. Please see the website, jidianstation.org.

Yes, this is late, I know as the week is now half over. I've been busy, so you'll have to live with the tardiness of the post.

Friday night: was working madly on getting ready for the LARP. Lots of writing and suffering from my brain wiring. You see, as I was working on the game, it occurred to me how useful it would be to able to search the character's background information. Something that should be easy enough to implement, right? You would think. Something funny was happening with the code, causing the CPU to peg out around 100% and spike the memory usage to up around 2 GB for the IIS application.

Debugging was going on was difficult because of the memory and processor constraints. What was bothering me so much, though, was the fuck that I was stuck. I could not get past it. I would tell myself that I needed to work on content rather than fiddling with code. I knew this is where the work I should be focusing on ought to be the game content, but I could not take my mind off it. I had to fix the problem. There was nothing I could do stop myself.

Frankly, it drives me completely nuts. Anytime there is a computer problem, I will focus on it until it is solved. Focus really isn't the right word. It's more like I obsess about it and it becomes the driving desire. The only time I stop before it's done is when I am on the verge collapse. Even then that doesn't always work.

I eventually found the problem: the counter variable used in the loop that was iterating across the characters was not, for some reason I could not discern, incrementing. I looked and I am positive that it was some side effect because I was passing the variable by value, meaning I was passing a copy of variable and not the variable itself, to the helper function. So that couldn't be it. For what ever , the counter was stuck at 2. Forever, causing a tight loop that brought the system to its knees. The fix was to use a different variable name.

In the grand scheme of things, this feature was icing. While it makes life easier and could've waited, but I could not let it go. The fact that I was helpless to it bothers me a lot.

We ended up canceling the Ji Dian Station game as [livejournal.com profile] sylvan was sick. I survived the vampire game on Saturday night. Score! Mission accomplished and now Mr. Crescent can get on with paying work. ;)

Sunday was a photo shoot with Jenny Rotten of the Nasty Habits and then a play session later.

We are looking for 2 volunteers to assist during the opening 30 minutes of Lights Out at Norwescon to help with player check-in and picture taking.

Here are the two positions:

Player Check In - Simply, you hand out the character packets to the players as they arrive and check off their name from the list. After which, you send them to volunteer number two, the photo manager. Filled.

Photo Manager - Your job is to take photographs of the individual players, print the photo on the printer, write the character's name on the photo, and then tack the photo to the Wall O' Photos so that people who have a character tie to another character knows what they look like. If you have a PictBridge compatible camera that you do not mind using, that would great.

We look forward to playing with you all.

Anyway, she has gone back to a bed and I'm out in the lobby with the Girly Girl. I will try to work on the game from here, without my notes and doing it from my phone, I don't know how far I'll get. I figure I can apply XP and character updates in the morning.

But now, I cope by thinking up stories and down the down the ideas.
