Debate aftermath

fullcontactmusePerhaps someone might have a differing view from those who read my journal. Last night, during the debate, the question of same sex marriages came up. The president made his comments about homosexuality and the sanctity of marriage.
Then senator Kerry spoke and this is what he said, “We're all God's children, Bob, and I think if you were to talk to Dick Cheney's daughter, who is a lesbian, she would tell you that she's being who she was. She's being who she was born as. I think if you talk to anybody, it's not a choice.”
To me, this comment did not strike me as out of line by the candidate. He could’ve been speaking about any member of the GLBT community, right? But he chose to use someone every one would recognize. Was this out of line or mean? Not in my eyes. A shrewd debate move most definitely and the aftermath of that those comments answers a question I’ve had in my mind for awhile.
Vice President Dick Cheney called himself a “a pretty angry father” today at the remark. Lynne Chaney made the proclamation that Kerry was “not a good man.”
The remarks of the Vice President and his wife struck me as a “He’s not a good man because he condoned our daughter’s homosexuality.” It struck me as a shame response. It’s okay as long as no one ever mentions it.
Does anyone see Senator Kerry’s comment as ill intended towards the Cheneys? If you do, I want to here why you think that way. I want to understand the point of view, even if I don’t agree with it.

Two things...
Date: 2004-10-14 02:20 pm (UTC)2) That and there's kind of an unwritten rule that you're supposed to not involve each other's kiddos in the whole 'political process'. It's silly to get upset when people are saying either nice or factual things but it prevents people from saying, 'so and so is a lousy candidate for president becuase their kid is messed up' or whatever.
